1. FELA – BOXSET (curated by ?LOVE) – UNIVERSAL RECS.

FELA’S MUSIC IS POWERFUL RHYTHMIC, HYPNOTIC JAZZ WITH A MESSAGE.. MY FAV KIND OF SHIT!

Over a decade after his death, vindication has come to Fela Kuti, Africa’s musical genius. AfroBeat, his gift to the world, is now an international staple on his own uncompromising terms, social content intact.

Throughout his life, Fela contended that AfroBeat was a modern form of danceable, African classical music with an urgent message for the planet’s denizens. Created out of a cross-breeding of Funk, Jazz, Salsa and Calypso with Juju, Highlife and African percussive patterns, it was to him a political weapon.

By the end of his life, Kuti had become a symbol of Nigeria’s (and African) struggle against colonial oppression, rule and influence. His battle ended on August 2, 1997 when Fela Anikulapo Kuti succumbed to complications caused by the AIDS virus in Lagos, Nigeria. But the music lives on. This collection captures many of Fela Kuti’s classic musical moments. Silenced by death, Fela’s legacy, which spanned more than 35 years, eventually burgeoned into a sizeable, impressive catalog.

Born Fela Ransome Kuti on October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, he lived the life of a revered musician, political activist and dissenter. Fela was the bane of every Nigerian dictatorship and military regime that successively took power during his lifetime (His home was twice ransacked and once burnt down by military thugs, and Kuti spent 2 years in prison on fraudulent charges.). This antagonism provided much if not all of the material for Kuti’s unique artistry.

Kuti’s brand of music, which he himself dubbed “Afrobeat”, was a vehicle for his contempt for injustice: equal parts funk, jazz and socio-political commentary, yet deeply rooted in African traditionalism. It is determinedly circular, cyclical and repetitious and often conveys an ageless, tribal sense of urgency. In many cases Kuti’s music strings the listener along into what is the typical experience of any common poor, oppressed African, as if by some form of sonic hypnosis (“Shuffering & Shmiling”, Disc 2). “I.T.T.”, “Authority Stealing” and “Beast of No Nation” are Fela staples included on King of Afrobeat.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, now literally meant ‘He Who Emanates Greatness (Fela), Having Control Over Death (Anikulapo), Death Cannot Be Caused By Human Entity (Kuti). Ironically, this now aptly represents his music – and this retrospective illustrates how powerful it still sounds today.

KEN RUZIC – 20 YR RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION – CAGED CHAMELEON GALLERY, SANTANA, CA

THE EVOLUTION OF LORD KINNETH’S JOURNEY THROUGH MANY WONDEROUS LANDS.
HIGHLY DETAILED SCENES DEPICTING  MYTHICAL CREATURES, EPIC BATTLES OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS AND POLYNESIAN INSPIRED TIKI FREAKNESS. KEN’S ART IS A STUDY OF CURIOUSITIES..

I FIRST ENCOUNTERED KENS’ ARTWORK IN THE LATE 90’S, DURING A PERIOD IN WHICH I MANGED AN ART GALLERY AND PICTURE FRAMING SHOP IN THE SANTA ANA ARTISTS VILLAGE. ONE EVENING DURING THE ARTWALK, I NOTICED A CROWD ACROSS THE STREET AT THE NEWLY OPENED CAGED CHAMELEON GALLERY, SO I WENT TO CHECK OUT THE SHOW. IT WAS MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE GENIUS OF RUZIC, AND WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY HIS ART AND THE FUNNY LITTLE DESCRIPTIVE STORIES HE WROTE OUT THAT ACCOMPNAIED EACH PAINTING. .  IT REALLY STUCK OUT AS ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS I HAD EVER SEEN, AND IS FITTING THAT YEARS LATER I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH KEN, EXHIBITING HIS  ART WORK AT THE LIGHT GALLERY

TECHNICALLY IT WAS RELEASED TOWARDS THE END OF 2009, BUT I DIDN’T DISCOVER
IT TILL EARLY 2010.  WAS PROBABLY THE 1 ALBUM I LISTENED TO THE MOST, AND STAYED ON REPEAT ON MY IPOD PLAYLIST. ORIGINALY RECORDED IN 1981, ITS A RASTAFIED TAKE ON A CERTIFIED CLASSIC, BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO THE ORIGINAL WHILE STILL RETAINING THE

HERES INFO FROM THEIR WEBSITE
http://www.secretstashrecords.com

In the spring of 1981 a group of reggae studio musicians from Jamaica gathered in New York City under the direction of Jeremy Taylor, a music professor at NYU at that time. The result was this Reggae Interpretation of Kind of Blue.

Though he was primarily regarded as a world-class Jazz musician and educator, Taylor had taken several trips to Jamaica to study reggae music with some of the best performers in the world. In his 1979 book, A Space Between Taylor wrote, My first trip to Jamaica (May 1977) was the most eye-opening musical experience of my life. I met so many incredible players who had been brushed off by the snobby musical establishment at institutions such as the ones I was affiliated with. They showed more musicality, taste, and rhythmic comprehension than some of the most revered musicians in the states. I knew that I had to find a way to showcase their unparalleled talent in a different medium in order for some of my colleagues to fully understand and learn from it. This statement served as the basic concept behind this album. Taylor took the most loved, well-known modern jazz album of all time and put it in the hands of reggae musicians. It was in this context that he felt his contemporaries would be able to fully understand what it was he saw in these players.

Unfortunately, weeks after directing the sessions Taylor passed away in his Paris hotel room while on a speaking tour of Europe. A final mix of the album was never made and it was never released. Collectors have long spoken of this album and in the late 80s lo-fi cassette tapes of rough mixes circulated. No official release was ever issued until now.

In early 2009, Secret Stash Records began working with the Taylor estate to finally release this album. After creating final mixes, dub versions of all the songs were also made by Secret Stash producers. Now for the first time ever, this highly sought-after album is available. This vinyl-only release is a must have for any record collector.
